Contemporary and Classic American Modern Dance Alive for Today
Celebrated as one of the world's greatest dance companies, Limón Dance Company has been at the vanguard of American dance from its inception in 1946. Limón brings the immediacy of our common experience onto the stage, exuberantly and intensely, with musical and fully lived dancing. On tour the ethnically diverse company usually consists of 12 dancers plus Artistic Director Dante Puleio, a PSM / stage manager and a lighting supervisor. Specializing in the masterworks choreographed by José Limón, the company remains fresh and relevant by rethinking the Limón repertoire and by commissioning new work by contemporary choreographers such as Chafin Seymour and Olivier Tarpaga. While on tour they welcome the chance to offer master classes for all levels, matinees for youth, and community outreach collaborations.
Ballet Made Utterly, Gorgeously Human
Based in Memphis, but touring nationally and internationally, the 12-year old Collage Dance Collective lead by Kevin Thomas, an alumnus of Dance Theatre of Harlem and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, has worked to inspire the growth of ballet by showcasing a repertory of relevant choreography and world-class dancers representative of North America. The 9-member company dance ballets by Kevin Thomas, Frederick Ashton, Camille A. Brown, Dwight Rhoden, Joshua Manculich, Darrell Grand Moultrie, and Amy Hall Gardner. Their Rise residency program is an exceptional way to engage a whole community with ballet to raise an appreciation for the art of dance across the social spectrum, as well as point the way for social change.
Putting Audiences on the Path to Transcend Racism
A one-man show is written and performed by LeLand Gantt, Rhapsody in Black is about Mr. Gantt’s journey as an African American to rise above racism from the time of his youth in the 1960s and thorough-out his adult life as he built a career as a professional actor—a struggle that brought him to a challenging but life-affirming conclusion. This sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, but always human performance piece has 2 “makes”: a 90-minute version usually performed for mature audiences; and 60-minute version suitable for junior high and high school-aged audiences. Directed by the award-winning actress Estelle Parsons, it was developed under the auspices of New York City’s legendary Actor’s Studio.
